Dear Friends and Supporters,
On behalf of the GRIOT team, we’d like to extend our appreciation for being on GRIOT’s Annual Celebration and Benefit Host Committee in the past. Your participation was invaluable. We had high hopes of doing a live 24th Anniversary Celebration, but as you know COVID-19 risks prevent us from planning a large physical gathering. While it is impossible to duplicate the incredible community spirit that this event has come to engender, we still feel it is important to bring folks together and celebrate justice and equality in all its forms. So on October 27th, from 6:00pm – 7:15pm, GRIOT will hold its first virtual Celebration & Benefit event.
We once again invite you to participate and to serve as a Host for the event. Host co-chairs are the delightful duo of Board members TerryBoggis and Ann Cammett. The evening’s festivities will include extraordinary honorees and performances, and you, in the comfort of your home with your favorite meal and beverage, and most importantly a means to support our elders and show them that we care.
We need you this year more than ever. The well-being of our community and the GRIOT elders is foremost as we continue to offer members a rich array of innovative virtual programs, daily supportive services and calls, as well as nutrition and special needs assistance. These programs and services have been the lifeline to lessen isolation and nurture health and hope for our members. Our goal is to bring our community together and celebrate on the eve of what we hope to be a transformative election for our country.
As you know, GRIOT (Gay Reunion In Our Time) is dedicated to serving the needs of LGBTQ elders of color. In the spirit of our founders, we are honoring 4 people who have given visibility and leadership to our communities through their work, words, and actions. The honorees this year are truly of and by our communities – speaking out in many extraordinary ways against injustices and racism and for a world of dignity and equity for all. Rosa Clemente – community organizer, independent journalist, hip-hop activist, and the 2008 Green Party Vice President nominee; Jewelle Gomez – author of many books most notably The Gilda Stories, poet and playwright and recipient of two Lambda Literary Awards; Andrea Jenkins – performance artist, transgender activist and the first African American openly transgender woman elected to office in the United States. She is currently the Vice-President of the Minneapolis City Council; and- Columbia Law School professor and human rights legal scholar and activist; and Kendall Thomas – co-founder and director of the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School, interdisciplinary writer, educator and a professional Jazz vocalist.
We are asking Host Committee Members to do the following:
1) make a contribution in lieu of purchasing a ticket or sponsorship if possible;
2) secure at least 2-3 friends/colleagues to “attend” the event and make a contribution if possible (we are not requiring that folks give in order to attend the virtual event and we hope that they will feel inspired to do so)
3) spread the word and include your name on the invitation.
As a host you will be supporting and honoring the elders and ancestors who have blazed a path for us and continue to be an important part of our communities. This event is one of our largest means of general support each year. Please let us know by September 25th if you agree to be on the Host Committee so we can begin to list you on our event materials.
Below are the giving levels in place of the ticket prices and sponsorship levels from past years. We are happy to answer any questions you have. We look forward to hearing from you.
