GRIOT Circle celebrated our 20th Anniversary last year with a fabulous Gala. We are still growing and aging gracefully and hope you will join our Host Committee this year.
We are having a Celebration and Benefit on Tuesday, October 3, from 6:00-8:30 pm at
THE CENTER on W. 13th Street in Manhattan.
As you know, GRIOT (Gay Reunion In Our Time) is dedicated to serving the needs of LGBTQ Elders of Color. In the spirit of our founders, we will honor three people who have given visibility and leadership to our communities through their work, words, and actions.
Confirmed honorees are:
Achebe Powell – The Regina Shavers Legacy Award
Powell’s activism spans many decades and is an acclaimed, dynamic trainer on issues of diversity and multicultural living. She is active in the global women’s human rights movement and a founding mother of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice.
Keith Boykin- The Changemaker Award
Boykin is a journalist, political commentator for CNN, and author of four books. He is a founder and former President of the National Black Justice Coalition.
Barbara Turk – The Changemaker Award
Turk is NYC’s Director of Food Policy and has served as Executive of Director of the YWCA and HIV Care Services. She is also a former Senior Fellow at the Community Resource Exchange.
We invite you to join the Host Committee and help spread the word about GRIOT and this event. As a Host Committee member, you will be supporting and honoring the elders and ancestors who have blazed a path for us and continue to be an important part of our communities. Please complete the attached Host Committee form and return no later than August 16th, in order to have your name included on the invitation/evite. We invite Host Committee members to email us a personal message for any or all of the honorees – not to exceed 50 words. We will put your message on the GRIOT website and share it the night of the event.
We look forward to seeing you on October 3rd!
