GRI.OT (/gre-ot, gre'o, gre'ot/)

A storyteller in western Africa who perpetuates the oral tradition and history of their village or family. The acronym GRIOT stands for Gay Reunion In Our Time. The two together symbolize the heart and soul of our organizational “home.”
Our Mission
GRIOT Circle is a community-based, multigenerational organization serving LGBTQ+ elders of color.  Our mission is to respond to and eliminate all forms of oppression, including: ageism, racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, poverty, xenophobia, and their intersections. We achieve this by providing health, wellness, advocacy, and leadership activities to remove isolation and fear, build community, as well as honor racial and ethnic traditions.
Our Story

GRIOT Circle (Gay Reunion In Our Time) was founded as an informal gathering of elders and was officially recognized as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in 1996. GRIOT Circle remains one of the few organizations exclusively dedicated to serving the needs of elder LGBTQ+ people of color.

Key Demographics

GRIOT Circle exists at the intersection of equity, aging, and LGBTQ+ justice—uplifting a powerful community often left unseen. We proudly serve over 400 older adults, primarily Black, African-American, and Caribbean-American individuals, 90% of whom live in low-income households and 50% of whom are retired and navigating life on fixed incomes. Our members—70% of whom are women—reside in historically underserved New York neighborhoods like East New York, Crown Heights, and Harlem. GRIOT is more than a safe space; it’s a vital lifeline that affirms identity, combats isolation, and fosters community among LGBTQ+ elders of color. As we build a future where aging is not a barrier to dignity or connection, we call on corporate partners, funders, and changemakers to invest in longevity, visibility, and justice for those who paved the way.

GRIOT Staff

We recognize that far too many members of our community have been systematically overlooked, underserved, and have endured discrimination and violence based on their age, race, sexual orientation, and/or gender expression.

That’s why we empower ourselves to be self-sufficient and free to enjoy aging in a safe and supportive environment.

GRIOT Circle’s mission is to respond to and eliminate all forms of oppression, including: ageism, racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, poverty, xenophobia, and their intersections. We achieve this by providing health, wellness, advocacy, and leadership activities to remove isolation and fear, build community, as well as honor racial and ethnic traditions.
